such thing as the square root of -9 .

But you don't need it to answer this question. The question is only really talking about

what a "square root" is. So all you have to say is: "I can't imagine what the square root

of -9 might look like. But whatever it is, I know that if I multiply it by itself, I'll get back

the -9, because that's what 'square root' means."

By the same reasoning, I could just as well say "The square root of this onion times

the square root of this same onion is this onion."
