for the plant, a leaf takes in carbon dioxide and is also primarily responsible for the water that the plant takes in through it's roots. The leaf also absorbs photons from our planets star and it uses these photons to provide the energy needed to separate the atoms in the water and carbon dioxide molecules, which are then made into sugars for the plants growth etc, leaving an oxygen atom to be exhaled. It is part of a process called photosynthesis, some elements of which need photons (the light reactions) and some do not ( the dark reactions). Without the leaf there would be no animals, including us. For me personally, I dry certain leaf species and make tea with them during the winter months.
