252 = 2 x 126 = 2 x 2 x 63 = 2 x 2 x 7 x 9 = 2 x 2 x 7 x 3 x 3

198 = 2 x 99 = 2 x 11 x 9 = 2 x 11 x 3 x 3

Then find all of the common factors of these

252 = 2 x 3 x 3 x 7 x 2

198 = 2 x 3 x 3 x 11

As you can see, both 252 and 198 have two 3s and one 2. If you multiply these together, you get:

2 x 3 x 3 = 18

18 is your answer
