  1. x + y = 18
  2. x - y = 6

Add the two equations together.

(x+x)+(y-y)=(18+6)

2x = 24

x = 12

Substituting back into equation 1: (12) + y = 18

y = 6

check:

12 + 6 = 18

12 - 6 = 6

It checks. ■
