So X = 9 - Y then (9 - Y) x Y = -48
then -YxY + 9 x Y = -48 or YxY - 9 Y - 48 = 0 (rewritten)
Then use discriminant, Delta = (-9)x(-9) - 4 x 1 x -48 = 273
So
Y = (9 - sqrt(273)) / 2 and X = 9 - Y = 9 - ((9 - sqrt(273)) / 2
OR
Y = (9 + sqrt(273)) / 2 and X = 9 - Y = 9 - ((9 + sqrt(273)) / 2
