Best Answer

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineering) 20W is a quality (viscosity) of oil.

SAE J300 has established eleven viscosity grades, of which six are considered Winter-grades and given a W designation. The 11 viscosity grades are 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W, 25W, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60. These numbers are often referred to as the 'weight' of a motor oil.

The lower the viscosity grade, the lower the temperature the oil can pass the standard test. For example, if an oil passes at the specifications for 10W and 5W, but fails for 0W, then that oil must be labeled as an SAE 5W. That oil cannot be labeled as either 0W or 10W.

What does the w mean in motor oil?

The 'W' stands for WINTER. It does not stand for weight. What would the oil be weighing? 12oz of 10w-30 weighs the same as 12oz of 5w-20. It is related to the cold temperature viscosity of the product. A multi-viscosity oil, 5W-20 for example, will perform like an SAE 5 product when cold and a SAE 20 product when hot. And as a bit of additional info, oils are not 'weighted' they are graded. SAE grades the oil.. SAE 5, 20, 30..

What is the meaning of 20 w 40 in sae 40 lubricant?

The numbers in a lubricant's SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) rating represent its viscosity at different temperatures. In the case of a SAE 20W-40 oil, the number before the 'W' (20) indicates its viscosity in colder temperatures, while the number after the 'W' (40) represents its viscosity at operating temperatures.
