Newton's motivation (Why) was trying to understand how the Universe worked. Newton was trying to "understand" why the apple fell down to the center of the earth.

Most people try to understand how to solve a "problem", scientists like Newton try to understand how the Universe work and in so doing, solve present "problems" and prevent future "problems."

Newton's curiosity led him to discover why and how masses move in the universe.

Masses move in a straight line with constant speed and direction unless acted on by an external force. No force , no change in motion. Change in motion, change in Work.
