Historians identify three or four periods of religious awaking in the US, known as the first, second, third and fourth great awakening. All featured protestant ministers, protestant churches and revivals. The first took place during in the 1730's and 40's. The second began in the later 1700's and lasted until about 1840 . It led to abolitionist movements, temperance unions and groups devoted to advancing women's rights. The third awakening ran from 1860 to 1900 . The YMCA, Chautauqua societies and other Christian groups emerged from the movement. The existence of the fourth is debatable, but some see the growth of the Southern Baptists and other "born again", fundamentalist Christian churches, which began about 1970, as a great religious awakening.
