There was only one Dutch colony on the American mainland, which was New Netherland. The English seized it in 1664 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, The treaty of Breda ending the war ratified permanent English possession.

The New Netherland claim included all of what is now New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware and Vermont, with substantial portions of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and parts of New Hampshire as well. In practice, their was only occupation by 1664 of the Hudson River Valley, parts of New Jersey, western Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware. (Earlier migration from the English colonies had led local Dutch leaders to surrender most of Connecticut, but neither the English or the Dutch governments officially accepted the agreement.)

The English renamed the entire mass the "Province of New York," and immediately began dividing it into the states we know today.
