you add exponents in a case like 1 to the 5th (to the 5th is your exponent of 5)

So 1 to the 5th + 1 to the 9th. you would just add your exponents. so 9+1=10

so you answer would be 1 to the 10th.

this is only when you have 2 of the same base number, in this case, your base number is 1
