I'm a plumber. I use it to calculate pipe lengths and angles. It is essential when sizing or designing heating systems. Ordering materials for a job or estimating costs demands a firm basis in math. There are many other ways it crops up daily. I imagine that other trades and professions have similar needs.

Mathematics is different from arithmetic. We probably can get by in life with the arithmetic we put together by the end of grade 5, but it wouldn't be a good understanding of the application of that arithmetic. That is where mathematics comes in. Any skilled job requires you to have an understanding of applying number skills to new situations - that is mathematics. Examples: carpenters, plumbers, electricians, chefs, managers, bankers, chemists, retail managers, builders etc. Generally at school we are exposed to many applications of math because in a free country we are allowed to choose our careers and not be told we are going to have a low skilled, low paid job in our adult life.

.

An understanding of science stops us being duped by the nearest snake oil remedy, non-sense advertising, fake cures, politicians deciding what is good for us without evidence, companies selling us products that can harm us or the environment. Without science knowledge we will believe anything that is told to us without saying - that doesn't sound right, where's the evidence. There was a time when the public was told that smoking is good for us? Helps us relax. Does not cause cancer because "my 82 yo grandmother smoked and she is fine". Science makes us question. "If this poison is diluted several thousand times until the water remembers it then it will cure you of snake bite, cancer and pimples." Sorry, my understanding of science stops me from buying that modern version of snake oil.

you use math out of school for many things. for example you use math out of school when your measuring fluids when baking and have to calculate how many more cups you need. you may use math when in construction to find how tall something needs to be and the width needed to support it.

(ik thats only three but its a start good luck)
