  • 3 * 4 does not equal 5. The closest situation I am aware of is to say 3 * 4 ≡ 5 (mod 7). That is, three times four is congruent to five modulo seven. This means that if you take 3 and multiply it by 4 you get 12. Then if you subtract a number of 7s (in this case just one) you get 5. This is called modular arithmetic and goes back to the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss. It is worth noting that 3 and 4 and not the only pair of numbers that are congruent to 5 modulo 7.
