Wealthy Germans were using candles in trees since the 17th century. around 1900 they began using glass bulbs and lanterns to hold them in place instead of gluing or pinning them. Edward Johnson, Thomas Edison's assistant, came up with the idea of electric Christmas lights. after a tragic fire in 1917 caused by Christmas lights, Albert Sadacca invented the safety light and started a huge multimillion dollar company, NOMA Electric Company.

One legend is that Martin Luther while walking home in the woods saw the starlight through an evergreen and wanting to share the beautiful sight with his wife so he cut it down and brought it home and placed candles in it to represent the stars.

Candles were replaced with lights when a worker of Thomas Edison brought some light bulbs home and put them on his tree. When his neighbors saw them they wanted them to so Edison started selling them to the public for their trees.

According to Christmas Archives, started when a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, went to Germany to predict the word of God. The legend says that he used a triangular tree to explain the Holy Trinity of God. The people that converted began to revere this tree as the God's tree. In the 12th century, as a symbol of Christianity, people would hang the tree upside down from the ceiling. The first decorated Christmas tree was at Latvia in 1510.
