Discounting the failed Viking settlements in Newfounland, in which the historic records are scant and vague, the first settlement in the Americas was by Christopher Columbus called La Navidad, founded in 1492 on the island of Hispaniola in territory of the present-day republic of Haiti. The first European settlement in what is now the US was the Town of Caparra, founded by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1512 and is now known as San Juan, Puerto Rico. He later attempted the first European settlement in the continental US in 1521. He took farmers, artisans, priests and animals to the area now known as Charlotte Harbor, Florida. They were attacked by the Calusa Indians and he was mortally wounded. The first European settlement continually populated in what is now the United States is St. Augustine in Florida. It was first organized on September 8, 1565, by Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles. The date was significant because it was the feast day of St. Augustine. The Spaniards also celebrate the first marriage, birth, baptism, mass, etc… in what is now the USA.
