The current American version of the grounded plug, with two vertical blades and a round grounding pin was invented by Philip F. Labre, while he was attending the Milwaukee School of Engineering. It is said that his landlady had a cat which would knock over her fan when it came in the window. When she plugged the fan back in, she would get an electric shock. Labre deduced that if the plug were grounded, the electricity would go to earth through the plug rather than through the person holding it. He applied for a patent on 12 May 1927,[10] and was issued a US patent for grounding receptacle and plug in June 1928.[10] As the need for safer installations became apparent, earthed three-contact systems were made mandatory in most industrial countries.

No you can not you will need to replace the plug with a 4 prong the same as the style of your oven and change your breaker to the correct Amp for your style of 4 prong plug

Change the outlet to a grounded one. Get an adapter that goes from 3 prong to 2. Break the ground prong off. Any one of these will work.

What do you do if you have no outlet for your dryer's 2-inch 3-prong plug?

call an electrician!!!

Can you plug a 3 prong extension into a 110 volt outlet?

Yes, provided the outlet has a three element receptacle. The third prong is ground. If you use an adapter that connects three prongs to a two slot outlet there is a shock danger.

Can you replace a 2 prong outlet with a 3 prong outlet if there is no ground line or is the ground required?

YES - it will work fine, and hopefully you have grounding in the plug. If you do not, you should also get surge protection and a safety cap when not using. The 3 prong will not create a ground, so it will not change the fact that it is dangerous not to have ground (you know kids and outlets).

You just moved in your new home and the outlet for the dryer is a 3 prong your dryer is a 4 prong you should you do?

Change either the plug or the cord. The fourth prong is another ground. It would be easier to change the cord.

Is it necessary to connect the ground wire to a 4-prong 240V outlet - I am switching a 3-outlet to a 4-prong outlet for my new dryer but the ground wire is cut off so I can't connect it?

Only if you wanted to fry your hair.for God sake(and yours)buy a new cord to hook up your dryer

What is the difference between a 4 prong dryer outlet and a 4 prong stove outlet?

The four blade dryer plug brings a separate ground wire from the machine to the electrical grounding system. The three blade dryer plug depended on the neutral wire of the plug to make this connection.

Which wire in a 240V cable with black white and bare copper wires connects to which prong in a 3-prong 30-amp 120-240V dryer outlet?

Do not use this type of cable to feed a 120/240V dryer outlet. The outlet is ungrounded, and the third conductor is neutral not ground. Your ground wire must be sheathed by code. You cannot use the bare neutral conductor as ground. Diagram Did Not Come Through. You Have a 3 Prong Connector. The Prong On The Bottom By Its Self Connect The Bare Wire. That Is What Was # 3 Connect The Others To The Two Prongs Next To Each Other. Hope This Makes Some Sense (1) (2) (3) Connect White To (1), Connect Black To (2) Bare (3) Good Luck

How many holes are there on a standard 120 volt electrical outlet?

Usually 3. Why two different size prong? Two for the prongs and a third for the ground.

How do you hook up 4 prong cord to 3 prong dryer?

To adapt a three prong range cord?æto a four prong outlet you need to remove the screws from the back plate to open the electric access panel. Then, pull out the copper grounding strip attached to the middle terminal. Next, remove the green ground screw from under the terminal block and attach it to the four prong outlet.?æ
