He got a lot of pbulicity for competing in the 2012 Olympic but became innfamous when, on Valentnes Day in 2013 he shot and killed his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, in their Pretoria, South Africa home. He claimed he had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder hiding in the bathroom, but he was arrested and charged with murder. His trial was somewhat sensational because of his pre-existing international fame, He was found guilty of "culpable homicide" but prosecutors appealed the case and a five-person panel at the Supreme Court of Appeal in South Africa overturned the culpable homicide verdict and convicted him of murder.
