Copernicus came up with a new theory of the planets' movements among the stars in 1543. It had the Sun at the centre instead of the Earth, which was in the centre in the ancient Ptolemaic theory. Both theories used circles and epicycles to describe the planet's orbits, which they modelled quite accurately.

The modern theory still has Sun in the centre but the rest of the theory is different from the one invented by Copernicus and promoted by Galileo. The modern theory uses elliptical orbits for the planets and was devised by Kepler (1609) working with the latest observations by Tycho Brahe.

Nicholas Copernicus developed the first heliocentric theory as an alternative to the earlier Ptolemaic theory which was geocentric.

Both of the models used circles and epicycles to describe the paths that the planets take in the sky. Copernicus's model used smaller epicycles to describe the orbits of the inner planets and in that sense he was correct in saying it was a simpler model.

When Tycho Brahe came along he developed new equipment for measuring the positions of planets more accurately than ever before. Tycho believed the Earth was at the centre but his measurements were used by Kepler to discover a model that fitted the measurements more closely than the other models. Kepler used elliptical orbits with the Sun at (or near) the centre, and he produced the three laws of planetary motion, called Kepler's laws, as a result of his calculations.

A lot later, Isaac newton produced the laws of motion and the law of gravity, and used these to show theoretically that if the planets follow these laws they must move in elliptical orbits that follow Kepler's laws.

That started the process that caused the Kepler/Newton model to be generally accepted, as it is today.

Nicholas Copernicus came up with a Sun-centred or heliocentric thory for the planets' orbits. In many respects it was similar to the old Ptolemaic system that had the Earth at the centre. It still used the old idea that the orbits must be based on the perfect curve - the circle. All the orbits had circles and epicycles to explain the planets' movements in the sky.

Johannes Kepler came up with an entirely new theory in 1609 after fresh observations by Tycho Brahe that showed up faults in the old theories of Ptolemy and Copernicus. Kepler retained the idea of placing the Sun at the centre, but introduced the idea of planar elliptical orbits to replace all the paraphernalia of circles and epicycles.

70-80 years later Newton's discoveries showed that Kepler's theory could be based on the law of gravity and the laws of motion. It is the modern model, with small adjustments from the General Theory of Relativity.
