The colonial period in America lasted for 192 years, from 1584 to 1776. During that time there were eleven English kings and ruling queens as well as a period of more than eleven years when England did not have a monarch.

In 1584, when the first attempt at colonization in the "Colony and Dominion of Virginia" took place, Elizabeth I, was the "virgin queen". She was followed by:

James I, 1603 to 1625; The first permanent settlement in Virginia and founding of Massachusetts and New Hampshire took place.

Charles I, 1625 to 1649; Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Delaware were founded.

The Commonwealth, when England had no monarch, 1649 to 1660; North Carolina was first settled.

Charles II, 1660 to 1685; South Carolina, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were founded.

James II, 1685 to 1688;

William II, 1689 to 1702, and Mary, 1689 to 1694;

Anne, 1702 to 1714;

George I, 1714 to 1727;

George II, 1727 to 1760; Georgia was founded

George III, 1760 to 1820. The American colonies declared they were independent in July 1776 and George III acknowledged their independence in September 1783.
