something is undefined when the answer simply doesn't exist. for example, what in the limit of sin(x) as x approaches infinity? Since the function sin(x) oscillates back and forth for eternity, there is no limit. You simply can't put a final point on something that never stop moving back and forth, so the answer is undefined.
