Playing cards have been around in China since the 600s. The 52 card deck originated in about 1400 by Arabs. Four suits already existed, and I'm not sure anybody knows exactly why they chose to have 13 in a suit, but since it goes 1 through 10 and then a prince (jack), a queen and a king it makes some kind of sense. So 4 times 13 equals 52.
