They weren't allowed to have them longer, people in the north didn't want them so they didn't have any but they were allowed. When the Articles of Confederation were being made, the colonies met up and discussed what they thought should be added. Many colonies wanted to ban slavery but the southern colonies demanded they keep it or they threatened to leave.

More of that type of labor was required down south. The north was more advancements in technology and skilled laborers where as the south was mostly farm fields and giant plantations that needed to be planted and harvested. Very easy work but took a long time and was tedious and repetitive, which made it the perfect suit for a slave.

Simply, the plantation system. Needing large amounts of cheap labor so that very few could live very well. Not too many other people in the South owned slaves as they were expensive to buy.

the south is where they grew( and still grow) tobacco and cotton. They used slaves to work the fields.
