Simply put to insure quality...
There are many kinds of calibration standards out there. We at, Exaxol, make ICP, AA, Ion Chromatography, EPA, pH, and Conductivity standards among other things. They all have different shelf lives due to there matrix or stabilizers. Many require high purity acids to dissolve in solution and over time CO2 from the air will make carbonic acid in your standardized solution. This will affect pH dependent solutions and add impurities.
Tolerances are a big deal in many industries and even mechanical and digital measuring devices such as scales and electrodes need to be checked annually to maintain accuracy in your work.
I added a link to a more lengthy pH discussion if you were looking for more than a short answer response!

Yes.
Three dimensions means that you can draw three lines, each perpendicular to every other line. It also means that you need three numbers to describe a position in space.Three dimensions means that you can draw three lines, each perpendicular to every other line. A handheld turbidity meter measures turbidity of a water sample. The meter is calibrated using standard samples from the meter manufacturer. The picture with the three glass vials shows turbidity standards of 5, 50, and 500 NTUs. Once the meter is calibrated to correctly read these standards, the turbidity of a water sample can be taken.
THIS IS RIGHT OUT OF THE MANUAL FOR 97 OLDS BRAVADA THAT I OWN....The compass is self-calibrating, so it does not need to be manually set. However, if C (Calibration) is displayed, the compass will need to be calibrated. You may also place the compass in a non-calibrated mode by pressing and holding the MODE and US/MET buttons simultaneously while in the COMP/TEMP mode. After about 10 seconds, the compass will display C and you can release the buttons. Drive the vehicle in a complete 360 degree circle three times at a speed of less than 5 mph, and the compass will function normally. Once the calibration is complete, the compass will return to a compass reading
vanilline - 81°C to 83°C (range-1.5°) Acetanilide - 164°C to 165.7°C (range-1.0°) Caffeine - 235.6°C to 237.5°C (range-1.0°) All three standards starting & Ending points is within 1.5° only. In our operational way also it covers minimum, middle & Maximum calibration covered.

try getting into calibration mode and driving three tight circles in an empty parking lot(without a cop watching preferably).
Slowly drive the vehicle in a circle (less than 3mph 5km/h) until the SLOW CIRCLES TO CALIBRATE indicator changes to CALIBRATION COMPLETED. This will take three circles to complete calibration.
general industry, construction, and maritime are the 3 main standards of OSHA.
A calibration is a process that compares a known (the standard) against an unknown (the customer's device). During the calibration process, the offset between these two devices is quantified and the customer's device is adjusted back into tolerance (if possible). A true calibration usually contains both "as found" and "as left" data. A validation is a detailed process of confirming that the instrument is installed correctly, that it is operating effectively, and that it is performing without error. Because a validation must test all three of these operational parameters, it is broken into three different tests: the installation qualification (IQ), the operational qualification (OQ), and the performance qualification (PQ).
In Secret Agent Mission 5 once you have the three "elements" you return and G will tell you to put them into the "calibration machine". I had this same problem- not being able to find it. Next to the goggles is a funnel thing that you click when you have one of the elements in your hand- it should go in.

Typically, every country can have their own set of accounting standards used for private enterprises. However, the three major accounting standards recognized globally are US GAAP, Canadian GAAP (although Canada is switching to IFRS effective January 1st, 2011), and IFRS (which is used by most countries in the world now, excluding USA, which uses US GAAP). *GAAP = Generally Accepted Accounting Principles **IFRS = International Financial Reporting Standards
