We have 12 months in a year because at one point or another we had a calendar based on the lunar cycle (28.5 days, the time from one full moon to the next), in an attempt to combine this with the solar cycle (~364.25 days, time to go around the sun) we added months, which are approximately the length of a lunar cycle. You might want to check sources on the following information, but in my research, I recall learning that a Central or Southern American tribe used to have 13 months, the first 12 being 28 or 29 day, and the last month being the remainder of the year.
