It's saying subtract a negative number, so take away from something that negative is adding something positive.

Think about it like this, If you have a number 5, and someone says to you take away from 5 negative 2, you'd have 7. If what you subtract from something is negative, you gain.

I know it may not make sense, but think about it for a bit and I'm sure you'll get it, if not, just remember to do it when you're doing your work.

Is a negative divided by a positive zero?

There is no such thing as a positive or a negative zero. A negative divided by a positive is a negative, and a positive divided by a negative is a negative. If you have a negative and a positive, the answer will be a negative. But if you have two negatives or two positives as the dividend and divisor, the answer will be a positive. In other words, dividing two positives or two negatives will always give you a positive. But dividing a positive and a negative will always give you a negative.

What is a negative divided by a positive divided by a negative?

The best way to figure this out would be to use an example. So suppose you had a -20 and divided that by a positive 5. That would give you a -4. Take that -4 and divide it by a -2 which would give you a positive 2 (knowing that two negative numbers cancel out to make a positive number). Thus a negative divided by a positive divided by a negative would give you a positive number.

What do you do with multipling and dividing positive and negative numbers?

If you multiply two positive numbers, or two negative numbers, the result will be positive. If you multiply a positive and a negative number, the result will be negative. The same rules apply for division - a positive number divided by a negative number, or a negative number divided by a positive number, will give a negative result. In any case, most of the calculation is the same as for positive numbers - you only have the additional complication of deciding whether to put a plus sign or a minus sign in front of the result. For example, -8 / 2 = -4; the absolute value (4) is the same as when you divide 8 / 2, only the sign changes. If you have a - and a - what do you get?

The answer to this depends on what you are doing with the numbers..... * A negative added to a negative gives a negative (-3) + (-5) = -8 * A negative subtracted from a negative may give either a negative or a positive (-3) - (-5) = +2 (-5) - (-3) = -2 * A negative multiplied by a negative gives a positive (-3) x (-5) = +15 * A negative divided by a negative gives a positive (-3) ÷ (-5) = +0.6
