This only works for people born from 1900 to 1999 (and who have already had their birthday in 2011). Take the last two digits of the birth year (say 1990 --> 90). This year is now 2011, so somebody born in 1990, will be 21 on his birthday this year. Now taking the last two digits (90) and adding the age (21) is 111.

A person who was born in 1900 will turn 111, this year on his birthday (00 + 111 = 111). A person who was born in 1999 will turn 12 this year on her birthday (99 + 12 = 111).

So for each year later that a person was born will add 1 to the total, but their age will be 1 less, so the total remains the same.

If the person was born before 1900 or after 1999, then this does not work: A person born in 2001 will be 10 this year (1 + 10 = 11).

the trick is not specific to the year 2011. For example, in 2010 the calculation came to the number 110,Thus, while the trick is certainly interesting - at least at first glance - it is not connected to the year 2011. In fact, broken down, the "trick" is actually fairly basic math.
