Mass and volume are extensive properties, which are dependent upon the size of the sample. A larger sample will have a greater mass and volume than a smaller sample. Density is an intensive property, which does not depend on the size of the sample. Density is a ratio of mass to volume, which does not vary with the size of the sample. The density of a larger sample will be the same as the density of a smaller sample.

Density can be used to identify a pure substance because it doesn't depend on the size of the sample because as the sample's mass increases, its volume also increases proportionately (the ratio of mass to volume is constant).

Because density depends on the type of element and is an intensive physical property for this reason.

The density is a specific characteristic for a material; a deviation from the standard accepted value at a given temperature could mean an impurification.

What is the density of gold in a ring and in a necklace compared?

If the gold is of the same purity the density will be the same.

How can you use density to determine the purity of diamonds?

Density of a diamond a purity are not exactly related, unless you are determining the purity of industrial diamonds. We did find a chemistry question on Chegg that may reveal how: "In a purity check for industrial diamonds, a 11.25 carat (1 carat = 0.2000 g) diamond is heated to 74.21°C and immersed in 27.30 g of water in a constant-pressure calorimeter. The initial temperature of the water is 27.20°C. Calculate ?T of the water and of the diamond (cdiamond = 0.519 J/g·K). ?Twater _____ K ?Tdiamond ______ K"

What property of matter is density?

Density depends on temperature, pressure and purity of a material.

Is the density of 8 mL of water greater than equal to or smaller than the density of 4 mL of water?

It depends upon the temperatures and purity of the two quantities of water. If they are both at the same temperature and both have the same purity, they will both have the same density as density does not depend upon the volume, but the substance itself. If they are at different temperatures, or have different purities, then they will have different densities, but which would be greater would depends upon which has which temperature and which purity.

Why does the density of a gold alloy increase if the purity increases?

it makes it worth more

How can you determine molarity from percent purity of solution?

Molarity is the no of moles of solute dissolved per litre of a solution. now if u want to find it from the percentage purity , here is the formula for that Molarity = % purity x density x 10 ___________________ molar weight of the solute note : density is usually given %purity problems, if its not u can evualvate it from from formula { d= mass/volume} i hope it solves the problem
