Metric or SI units of measure are broken down in multiples of 10 when converting from one unit to another. US standard measures are broken down into multiples of 2, 3, 4, 8 or 12 among others when converting from one unit to another. This makes conversions easier in the metric or SI system. Just moving a decimal point 1 place converts from one unit to another.

examples:

1 meter = 100 centimeter or 0.001 kilometer

1 liter = 10 deciliter or 0.1 dekaliter

1 gallon = 4 quarts or ~.03174 barrels

1 foot = 12 inches or 1/3 yard

Why does using standard measurement important?

Standard measurements make it easier for everyone to know what that measurement means. The metric system, which is the standard system used by scientists, is specifically designed to be easy to use. The English system is much more complicated, mathematically.

What should you do if the specimen or object that you are measuring the length of is much smaller than the standard for length?

If the specimen you are trying to measure is shorter than the standard, you can use a different unit. After the measurement is completed, you can convert to the standard unit.

Why there is need of standard units of measurement?

Standard units of measurement allow other people to know what you mean when you use those units. To make this recipe you need four ounces of butter. OK, we know how much that is. If we had no standard units, it would be very hard to accurately convey exactly how much butter the recipe requires. And then what would your cookies taste like?
