To compare the 2, they both must have the same denominator, the number on the bottom of the fraction. To get 2/3 to have a denominator of 12 you have to multiply both the numerator and denominator, top and bottom number, by 4. this leaves you with 8/12. so 9/12 is clearly bigger than 8/12 since it has a larger numerator, top number, while having the same denominator, bottom number.
