Here's a scale:
10 dB: leaves blowing in the wind
20-40 dB: a regular run-of-the-mill computer
30-60 dB: a server (like the big professional company ones. My Dell poweredge server weighs in at about 55-65 dB depending on temps and load)
75-95 dB: a car
85 dB: Here it starts damaging your hearing. Most MP3 players have a software limit at this level, ie. highest setting.
~ 100 dB: a motorcycle, Harley Davidsons and choppers are louder than this.
110 dB: a rock concert
120 dB: a jet airplane taking off (props are louder)
>200 dB: a nuclear blast from 2 km away. If you didn't burn to death, your eardrums would vaporize and even kill you because of the sheer sound pressure.
Because of the large variations in energy, between a weak sound and a loud sound, a logarithmic scale - like decibels - is appropriate.
Decibels
Yes it is.
yes, and it is measured in decibels
Normal speech
A noise level that measures 65 decibels is for a normal conversation on the noise scale. On this scale, 0 decibel is the threshold of hearing and 140 decibels is a jet plane at a distance of about 50 meters away.
The noise of a fan can be measured in decibels using a sound pressure level meter. Knowing the level of noise allows people to classify as pollution or conducive.
Loudness of sound is measured in decibels (dB).
•Sound can be measured in many ways such as decibels. There is a special machine which you can by that measures how many decibels something makes. A pin makes 10 decibels where as a loud persons or a stereo can make up to 80 decibels. Volume is measured in decibels. So Frequency is measured in hertz

A vessel may not be operated on Washington waters if, when measured from the shore, it produces a noise level over 75 decibels.
