Don't let their speed in Ghz fool you: each core in a multi-core processor is more powerful than a processor of the previous generation. The motivation for using processors at a lower clock rate and use them in parallel is to 1.) reduce heat and electrical requirements, and 2.) to facilitate better performance for apllications by creating more hardware thread

Why use many not-so-powerful processors in parallel?

Why not just design a single powerful processor instead of many workstation in parallel?

one single powerful processor consumes more energy generates more heat then multi-core processors ,A multi core processor will also be faster since there are multiple processors to handle the data manipulation instead of having to use time sharing.

What are the limitations in current computer related hardware?

There are probably many different challenges; here is one: It is getting difficult to continue doubling the speed of a single processor every few years, as has been the case in the past. Processors continue getting faster, but not much. The future lies in using multiple parallel processors - 2, 4, 8, or eventually even hundreds or thousands of them in a single machine (many processors can be placed on a single chip). Chips with these capabilities are already on the market - like the Core 2 Duo by Intel. However, much of the existing software will have to be rewritten to take advantage of multiple processors.
