They had the cotton plantations and they needed people to crop the cotton, so they had slaves do it because they didn't want to hire white people because if they had slaves, they wouldn't have to pay them, and they would have to pay the whites.
The southern colonists relied on slavery for the smooth running of the plantations. The south depended on slave labor for the cash crops of tobacco, indigo, and rice, which made the south the richest states in the Union.
The major cause for the expansion of slavery in the south was due to the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney. Harvesting cotton by hand was inefficient and it seemed that the cotton growing industry was fading away, and thus the demand for slavery as well. There was always a demand for cotton worldwide, including in the northern textile mills. With the cotton gin, this demand could efficiently be met.
Also slaves to be able to harvest the rice farmlands.
Slavery expanded in the early 1800s because it was discovered that cotton would grow in Mississippi. Slaves were needed to grow cotton.
BEcause they believed in slavery unlike the middle colonies and the New England colonies

If slavery spread then they would have a better chance of keeping slavery in the united states. They wanted to keep slavery in the south because they did not have to pay their workers like the factory workers in the North did. "Free" labor.
The southern colonies had large, spread out plantations there, and the crops they grew were indigo, rice, and some of corn. ER......... hope that helped...........Sincerely,:3
The parallel of Missouri's Southern border was the official reference-point for the new Western territories when they became states of the union. Anywhere north of that line - all the way to the Pacific - slavery was illegal.
The Phoenician traders spread the alphabet through the Mediterranean Sea. It was taken up by the Greeks and adapted as their own alphabet, and they spread this to their own colonies.

The first slave arrived in the colonies in 1609 and it was a progression towards slavery as the need for workers rose and indentured servants didn't work. The invention of the cotton gin added to the plantation owners need for more slaves. The number of cotton bales related directly to the population of slaves. By 1861 there were 4 million slaves in the southern states.
