Why were pencils cut into hexagonal shape?

Pencils are cut into a hexagonal shape for a variety of reasons. One reason is so that the pencil does not roll off a flat surface, such as a desk, quite so easily. Another reason for being cut hexagonally is so that they can stack more easily.

What shape is unshaped pencil?

Pencils are cut from wood blocks and are originally either square or (less commonly) round. They are either smoothed to a ROUND shape, or milled to a HEXAGON (6-sided) shape, which reduces their tendency to roll away on a mildly slanted surface. (Thicker carpenter's pencils are oval for this reason.)Pencils made from synthetic materials (plastic, polymer) can be extruded in any shape.

How slate pencil is made?

Slate pencils in different regions are made from different kinds of rocks, but the process is usually the same. The rocks are mined and they are cut into manageable slabs and then further cut into the required shape and size, usually 6 inch long rectangular pencils. Slate pencils in India(more specifically southern India) are made from a type of sedimentary rock known as Shale, which is composed of mud that is a mixture of clay minerals (kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite) and small quantities of other minerals especially quartz and calcite. The ratio of clay to the other minerals gives the shale its colour. Shale from which slate pencils are made, are light gray in colour. Slate pencils in certain other parts of India are made from soft Soapstone, which is a metamorphic rock, composed dominantly of talc.
