The best known was the 442nd Infantry Regiment. Though called a "regiment", it was in fact twice as large as any other US regiment. All other US regiments had three battalions, while the 442nd had six. There was also the 100th Infantry Battalion, made up mostly of Japanese-Americans from Hawaii, which usually operated with the 442nd Infantry. These seven battalions were almost as large as a US infantry division, which had nine infantry battalions.

Only Japanese-Americans living on the west coast of the continental US were subject to internment. In Hawaii, where over half the population was of Japanese ancestry, they were not interned, nor were Japanese living away from the west coast on the mainland.The Hawaiian Territorial Guard (equivalent to the National Guard) had several units which were largely Japanese-American. After Pearl Harbor these men were involuntarily discharged, but successfully petitioned to be allowed to serve. They were formed into the 100th Battalion of infantry, a "separate" battalion, not part of any larger unit. The 100th battalion was later part of or served alongside of the more famous 442nd Regiment, which was made up of Japanese-Americans from both the mainland and Hawaii, with many men volunteering from the internment camps. The 442nd was also a "separate" regiment, and the only "separate" regiment of infantry in the WWII American army.The 442nd was unique in another way. Every other US infantry regiment had three battalions, while the 442nd had six. Thus it had twice the fighting men as any other US regiment, with as many battalions as two regiments, or two-thirds of a regular infantry division. The 442nd is often said to be the "most decorated" regiment of WWII in the American army, but it should have had about twice the decorations of any other regiment, since it was twice as large. Probably somewhere around 6000-7000 men served in the 100th Battalion and the 442nd Regiment, which served with great distinction in Italy. Attached to the 442nd Infantry were the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion, the 232nd Engineer Company and the 206th Army band.There were other individual Japanese-Americans who served in regular units, but not too many. Japanese Americans were not a sizable component of the pre-war population.The 442nd Regiment had about as many members decorated as other regiments which saw heavy action. However, they were the beneficiary of a "review" during the Clinton administration, with the goal of upgrading previous awards. This was a followup to a previous Clinton effort which resulted in seven African-Americans having previous awards upgraded to Medals of Honor in 1993. In 1998 Clinton "upgraded" twenty previous awards to Medals of Honor for members of the 442nd, to go with the one whose Medal was awarded during the war, for a total of 21. This puts the 442nd well ahead of the 15th Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division, which had fifteen men who earned a Medal while the war was going on. So far as I know, no one has any plans to revisit the wartime decisions on awards for white soldiers, who are just stuck with any injustices that may have been perpetrated. There will be no second-guessing there, probably because there are no political points to be scored.

This unit was sent to Camp Shelby, MS for training in 1942. There were many skeptics that did not think the Nisei would be remain loyal to America. All the officers were haole (Hawaiian for white). The 100th Battalion(Seperate) was merged with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team as the 1st Battalion.
