Insufficient air or fuel can cause that kind of problem, as can poor compression or a slipped timing belt/chain. Check the simple stuff first, check the air filter and fuel filter. If either is restricted it will affect the performance of the engine. If that doesn't solve the problem, you'll need to go to the next step. Check the linkage to make sure it's opening up all the way. If that still isn't doing it, check compression. Low compression can mean a worn engine or a slipped timing chain/belt. Also, make sure the timing is right and that the injectors aren't plugged. If you have a "check engine" light, the computer is trying to tell you something. If that's the case, borrow, rent or buy a diag scanner and use it to find out what the computer says. If a light is on it could also be a throttle position sensor, oxygen sensor, MAP sensor or any of a number of other potential problems. Even if the light isn't on, it might be a good idea to run a diagnostic test of the computer. Sometimes the computer knows of a problem but doesn't turn on the light, or the light may be burned out.
