to balance the equation. If you don't do it on the other side then you are dropping it

For instance look at this.

2x=8

Now you have to divide 2 on both sides

2x=8

x=4

Now if you only do it to one side the answer may look like this

x=8 or 2x=4

So when you put your answer back in... it wont be true

Cuz 2(4)=8

8=8
