Standard form is a way of recording numbers. It uses a single number from 1 to 9, followed by a decimal point and the rest of the digits, and multiplied by a power of 10. For example, 3600000 in standard form is 3.6 x 106 and 0.00759 is 7.59 x 10-3.

There are many standard forms which depend upon the context. Here are some examples:

The standard form of a number (in the UK) is the same as the scientific notation. Any number may be written in the form a*10b where a (the mantissa) is such that 1 ≤ a < 10 and b, the exponent, is an integer.

The standard form of a straight line in 3-dimensional space is ax + by + cz + d = 0. There is be no z term in 2-d space, and additional terms with 4 or more dimensions.

The standard from of the equation of a sphere is (x-a)2 + (y-b)2 + (z-c)2 = r2. Again, in 2-d the z term is dropped, and additional terms are introduced in higher dimensional space.
