Since it is a 'minus' number you cannot take the square root , without going into IMAGINARY Numbers.

Hence sqrt(-196) = sqrt(-1) X sqrt(196) = 'i' x 14 = 14i

NB THe small case 'i' is used in mathemtics to indicate imaginary numbers.
