if you are talking about a 2d shape, aka a shape that is flat, like paper, then you need to find the base, and height. for a square or rectangle, you measure the horizontal side, and the vertical side, and multiply them, and your product is is [whatever unit you are using] squared. for any other shape, you have to break it up into other shapes that you can figure out. for triangles its base x height divided by 2. 3d shapes is surface area, which is a combined total of all areas of visible faces.
