This would be the instructions, given by a health care provider/professional to the patient, for taking the prescribed medication (pill or liquid) for a specified illness, pain or discomfort. This 'instruction information would be found on both the doctor's prescription form and the container, in which the medication is provided.

The following are definitions of each term.

  • 'medication', the product a health provider/professional will recommend (pill, ointment, liquid, etc.) a patient use, in an effort to assist the patient with relief of a pain, discomfort or other type of unhealthy condition. Also called, a pharmaceutical. Some medications are available OTC (Over The Counter), those you can buy off the shelf without a doctors recommendation. Others are by prescription only (BPO) and must be purchased at a recognized pharmacy.
  • 'tab' is short for tablet or the plural form of the word, tablets. Tablets are manufactured in round shapes in varying thicknesses. Edges may be rounded or hard edge.
  • '1 tab' is a single tablet; a single dosage; the amount taken at the prescribed interval of time.
  • '3 times a day', refers to the interval (time or times) the medication is to be taken. An example would be;

    "1 tablet should be taken 3 times each day; 1 at 8 AM, 1 at 3PM and 1 at 10PM."

    This routine is spaced out in 7 hour intervals (length of time), between each single tablet dosage, to be taken during the waking period (not asleep) of a given 24 hour period.

I'm assuming you're asking what the medical terminology for three times a day is, which is t.i.d., meaning to take the prescribed medication or treatment 3 times a day.

Some people consider it one in the morning, one at midday, and one at night. Others consider it one every 8 hours. Consult you doctor or pharmacist for a better explanation of the doses.
