The mascot of the University of California at Santa Cruz and a slimy, spotted banana describe what a banana slug looks like. The three species within North America, the California (Ariolimax californicus), Pacific (Ariolimax columbianus) and slender (Ariolimax dolichophallus) banana slugs have brown, green, tan, white or yellow bodies with black or brown spots, a pair of upper eyestalks for detecting light and a second for detecting chemicals and a slimy, thick coating of mucous overall.
