they cover about a 1/4 mile square....or like 40 acres. ^^Not necessarily true. I am not sure to the specifics, but I often take pictures of bucks during a night with my trail cameras that are shot the next morning miles away. Bucks (more commonly during the rut)will travel many miles a day searching for a doe in estrus. I have 3800 acres of hunting property and a few years back we had a piebald doe on that property that would often be seen at varying food plots all over that 3800 acres.

Deer do roam, but they generally have a home range. Does will often stay within a 1 square mile home range. Bucks about twice that.

When young bucks get to breeding age, they leave their original home range (that of their mother) and head off to find their own range. If they stayed, they would have to deal with the dominant buck in his home range (probably his father!) but he is too young to tackle that job so he heads off to find his own. This is probably the greatest move in his life.

Hearing depends on several factors. Some include… your hearing sensitivity, the intensity of the noise, the distance from that noise and the noise frequency level. Deer ears are large, which gather more sound waves than they would if they were smaller ears like humans. However, studies indicate even with large ears their hearing isn't much greater than a humans hearing.

In case it makes a difference to you, deer intensity senses include 1st its smelling ability, then its eyesight and then 3rd most sensitive is their hearing. A deer lives in the forest all its life and knows what normal sounds are and what is not. That one factor in itself is a great advantage; add its keen senses together and you have one acutely aware animal.

Usually they can hear things any where from 50 to over 200 yards. In some case a white tail deer can hear up to 5 miles plus.
