I suppose you could make a 3 x 3 or 4 x 4 square out of the factors of 24, but since 24 is not a square number, none of its factor pairs will create a square.

Why is eight a square number?

A square number is a number that has been produced by multiplying an initial number by itself. Thus, 8 is not a square number. This can quickly be checked by breaking the number down into its prime factors. If it is a square number, all the prime factors will pair off with duplicates. In this case, 8 = 2x2x2. While 2 of the 2s can partner off, we are left with one left over. Therefore we can say definitively that 8 is not a square number.

Is 72 a perfect square?

NO. 72 = 2 x 36 = 2 x 62 and 72 = 8 x 9 = 8 x 32 Some of the factors of 72 can be represented as perfect squares but not all the factors, hence 72 itself is NOT a perfect square number.

Why do all square numbers have an odd number of factors?

Because if you think about it, a square number has two factors that are the same. For example, look at the number 16. Its factors are 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16. 1 and 16 go together, 2 and 8 go together, and then 4 gets paired up with another 4.

How many factors do perfect square numbers have?

It depends what square number you're looking at. The square number 25 has only three factors (1, 5 and 25) but the square number 16 has 5 (1, 2, 4, 8 and 16.) A key point is that the factors don't pair up. There is always one middle factor that is the square root of the number and so cannot pair with any other factor. This means that all square numbers have an odd number of factors, while other numbers have an even number of factors.
