The factors of 4 are 1x4, 2x2, 4x1 = 1, 2 and 4.

The factors of 8 are 1x8, 2x4, 4x2, 8x1 = 1, 2, 4 and 8.

The factors of 12 are 1x12, 2x6, 3x4, 4x3, 6x2 and 12x1 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12.

The common factors are therefore 1, 2 and 4, thus the greatest common factor is 4.
