In the formulas below, / represents division, * represents multiplication, - subtraction, + addition and = is equal.

Tc = temperature in degrees Celsius, Tf = temperature in degrees Fahrenheit Tf = (9/5)*Tc+32; Tc = (5/9)*(Tf-32); Some examples: The freezing point of water, 0 degrees Celsius is equal to 32 degrees F. The boiling point of water, 100 degrees Celsius, is equal to 212 degrees F. Tf = (9/5)*0+32; Tf = 0+32; Tf = 32; Tf = (9/5)*100+32; Tf = 180+32; Tf = 212; Tc = (5/9)*(32-32); Tc = (5/9)*(0); Tc = 0 Tc = (5/9)*(212-32); Tc = (5/9)*(180); Tc = 100

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value, then divide by 1.8.

Thus 86 F, subtract 32 to get 54, divide by 1.8 to get 30 C.

32 F = 0 C (freezing point of water). So if below freezing you will get a negative number for the C value. 0 F = -17.8 C. If you are below 0 F, then you have to add the negative F value to -32 before dividing by 1.8, the result is a negative C value. Thus for -20 F, add to -32 to get -52, divide by 1.8 to get - 28.9 C.

The scales coincide at -40, that is -40 F = -40 C, as you should be able to verify now.

Cx1.8+32

(Use order of operation)

If you have a Fahrenheit temperature:

-- subtract 32 from it

-- then multiply by 5

-- then divide by 9

The number you have now is the corresponding Celsius temperature.

=====================================================

If you have a Celsius temperature:

-- multiply it by 1.8

-- then add 32

The number you have now is the corresponding Fahrenheit temperature.

Multiply degrees C by 9, divide by 5, and add 32. Water boils at 100 C or 212 F 100 C times 9 = 900 900 divided by 5 = 180 180 + 32 = 212
