Gross floor area or Gross external floor area includes perimeter wall thicknesses and external projections, it excludes open balconies but includes open sided covered areas. Gross internal floor area includes the whole area enclosed within the external walls and includes open sided covered areas (should be shown separately), it also excludes any area with a ceiling height of less than 1.5m except under stairways.

The gross floor area of any rectangular space is found by multiplying the length of the space times the width. If the length and width are in feet, the answer will be in square feet. If meters is used as a unit of measure, the answer will be in square meters.

If the gross floor area of something other than a rectangle is to be found, standard rules of geometry will be applied. For triangles, for example, one half the length of the base times the height will allow the area to be found. The shape of the floor will dictate which method is used to calculate its area.
