1.6 meters:

5 feet, 3 inches equals 5 3/12 feet (since there are 12 inches in a foot), and that equals 5 1/4 feet or 5.25 feet.

Since 1 foot equals 0.3048 meters, 5.25 feet equals 5.25 times 0.3048 meters/foot.

5.25 ft X 0.3048 m/ft = 1.6002 m = 1.6 meters, to 2 significant digits.

Always remember that 1 meter is equal to 39.37 inches or slightly more that a yard. So since 5 feet 3 inches is 63 inches, then divide 63 by 39.37 and the answer is 1.6 meters. I'm glad that Canada had gone metric years ago as this system is just so superior to the British system still used by the USA.

There are 0.0254 metres in one inch. There are 12 inches in one foot. Therefore, 5 feet 3.5 inches is equal to (5 x 12 x 0.0254) + (3.5 x 0.0254) = 1.6129 metres.
