You can calculate it but I find it much easier to just look at a reference chart.
For example, I just calculated an angled cut to make on my table saw using the Pythagorean theorem. One of the cuts needs to be 3.19 inches. My tape measure is accurate to a 32nd of an inch so I look up 0.19 in the column below.
I see that 6/32 matches, which equals 3/16. So I need to cut a piece 3 & 3/16 inches long.
My next cut wasn't so lucky. I needed 2.08 inches and the closest I can get using my tape measure is 3/32. It's a tad long but it'll work for what I'm doing.
If you need more precise measurements then you should use something more accurate than a tape measure.

To convert decimals into inches on a tape measure, remember that 1 inch is equivalent to 1 whole unit. For example, 0.5 inches is equal to 1/2 inch, 0.25 inches is equal to 1/4 inch, and 0.75 inches is equal to 3/4 inch. Simply count the number of units indicated by the decimal to determine the measurement in inches on the tape measure.
The length of a tape measure can vary, but a standard tape measure is typically 150 centimeters or 60 inches long.
With a ruler or tape measure. It is 8.625 inches
60 inches is equivalent to 1524 millimeters.
Nail = 2.25 inches Ell = 45 inches (England) Ell (A measure which equals the length of a man's arm and varies from 55 inches (French) to 25 inches (Danish)) !
tape measurement is very necessary,it helps for making furniture, constructing roads and buildings, measuring people, and around things that bend or are round.

20.4 inches is the same as 20 13/32 I believe
If you have a tape measure that measures in inches. First convert the inches to decimal inches. So 1-15/16" would be 1 + 15/16 or 1.9375. Next multiply that number by 2.54 to get centimeters. So 1.9375 x 2.54 would be about 4.92 centimeters.
What is 29.87 in on a tape measure
You can get tape measures that are graduated in centimetres or inches.
The number of inches is printed on its case.
You will not be able to measure to that accuracy using a tape measure. You should have marks at tenths of an inch and so you will get 2.3 inches on the tape measure. If you have a tape measure that has divisions to 1/32 of an inch then 2 and 10/32 is the nearest.
It is unlikely that a tape measure will extend that long, but 104.166... feet.
The inches need to be divided into tenths on the tape Then its 2 inches + 1 sub division (1/10)

Look on a tape measure, 13' 2"
