∙ 13y agoThe word "outlet" in the NEC (code) actually refers to a box. You have receptacle outlets, lighting outlets, and switch outlets.
If by outlet you are referring to a receptacle, the code defines it as "a contact device installed at the outlet for the connection of an attachment plug." Basically it refers to any device that allows access to power by plugging into it.
