The metric system was developed in the late 1700's as a way to standardise measurements throughout Europe. For each type of measurement there is only one base measurement with the use of prefixes to adjust the measurement. For example, the base measurement for volume is a litre . If we have a thousand litres, it is referred to as a kilolitre, as the prefix kilo means one thousand. The most common metric base units are the litre(volume), gram (mass) and metre (length). Prefixes include kilo (1000), hecto (100), deca (10), deci (0.1), centi (0.01) and milli(0.001).

I live in Australia and we use the metric system here as well.
