Numbers originated as a means of counting and recording items. The numbers 0 to 9 are commonly referred to as the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. Simple counting systems with symbols to represent 1 to 9 are very ancient, in terms of hundreds of years BC. The need to include a zero as an essential digit is credited to the Indian mathematician, Brahmagupta (598 -668 AD). His contribution to the advancement of mathematics and astronomy is quite incredible, and I have included a link that references several books on the history of ancient mathematics. I have also included a link showing how the symbols of 0 to 9 have changed over the years.
